Newark to Cap-Haïtien is the nonstop that serves New Jersey, Brooklyn and Queens without a Florida connection. Sunrise Airways flies it a few days a week, about four hours on an Airbus A320, from Terminal B. For many families in East Orange, Irvington and Elizabeth, Newark is the closest airport by far, and the nonstop avoids the tight Miami connection that catches people out in winter weather. The alternative is American through Miami, which adds a change of planes but runs daily once the Miami to Cap-Haïtien flight starts on November 1, 2026. Winter departures out of Newark can be delayed by de-icing, so a morning flight with a late-afternoon arrival is safer than an evening one.

When to book

Fares to Haiti peak from December 15 to January 8 and again in July and August, when the diaspora travels for the holidays and summer. Late January through April is the quietest and cheapest window. Book 6 to 10 weeks ahead for holiday travel; two to four weeks is usually enough in spring. Hurricane season runs June through November and can move flights at short notice.

About the airports

EWR

Newark Liberty International Airport

Newark, US · America/New_York

Newark Liberty is New Jersey's international airport and the closest to Jetvala's home in Plainfield. It has the New York area's only nonstop to Cap-Haïtien, on Sunrise Airways, and United's nonstops to Paris, Lagos and Santo Domingo.

CAP

Cap-Haïtien International Airport

Cap-Haïtien, HT · America/Port-au-Prince

Cap-Haïtien International Airport (CAP), also called Hugo Chávez International, is Haiti's second airport and, since November 2024, the only one US airlines are allowed to use. It sits on the coastal plain just south of the city, a few minutes from the historic center and about 20 km from the Citadelle Laferrière and Sans-Souci Palace at Milot. The airport was expanded in 2013 to take Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft on international flights, and it now carries the bulk of Haiti's traffic with the United States: Sunrise Airways from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Boston and Newark, and American Airlines daily from Miami starting November 1, 2026.

Arriving at Cap-Haïtien

On arrival you walk from the aircraft to the terminal and fill in the green immigration card if you did not get one on the plane; keep the stub, you hand it back when you leave. Immigration has separate lines for Haitian nationals and foreigners, and a US passport with Haitian roots goes in the foreign line. Foreign visitors pay a $10 tourist fee at a dedicated desk (US dollars, exact change helps). Bags come out on a single carousel; porters in numbered vests will grab your bags, and $2 to $5 per bag is the going rate. Customs is a hand check of anything that looks commercial: multiple new phones, boxes of goods and large quantities of medicine draw questions and sometimes duty. Total time from landing to the curb is 30 to 60 minutes on a normal day, longer when two flights land together.

The city is 10 to 20 minutes away by road. Taxis and moto-taxis wait outside the terminal; agree the price before you get in (around $10 to $15 to central Cap-Haïtien in a car, less by moto). Jetvala works with vetted local drivers who meet you at arrivals with your name, drive an air-conditioned SUV or minibus, and can be booked as an add-on at checkout or on WhatsApp. Milot and the Citadelle are 40 to 60 minutes south; Limbé is about an hour west; Labadee and Cormier beach are 30 to 45 minutes northwest. Ouanaminthe and the Dominican border at Dajabón are two to three hours east on Route Nationale 6, a road that is generally passable but should be driven in daylight with a driver who knows it. Overland travel to Port-au-Prince is not something we recommend in 2026; see our ground travel guide for the full picture.
