Flights to Haiti from New York: JFK or Newark?

The New York area's only nonstop to Haiti moves from Newark to JFK. Sunrise Airways ends Newark operations on October 25, 2026 and starts JFK in winter 2026. Here is how the two airports compare before and after the change, from Brooklyn, Queens, Spring Valley and New Jersey, and the straight answer on JetBlue.

Most people in Flatbush, Canarsie, Queens Village, Spring Valley, Irvington and Elizabeth start with the same two questions: which airport, and does JetBlue still fly to Haiti. This fall the first answer changes, so this guide gives it for both sides of the date. Everything below was checked on October 5, 2026 against the FAA, the State Department and Sunrise Airways' own notices.

The short version

Until October 25, 2026: Newark. Sunrise Airways flies Newark (EWR) to Cap-Haïtien nonstop from Terminal B, about four hours, a few days a week. It is the New York area's only nonstop to Haiti until then.

From winter 2026: JFK. Sunrise has announced that its Newark operations end on October 25, 2026 and that its direct Cap-Haïtien to New York service moves to JFK starting winter 2026. Sunrise has not yet published the first JFK date, the terminal or the days of operation. Until it does, check the search for the exact schedule.

Every day from November 1, 2026: either airport via Miami. American Airlines starts a daily Miami to Cap-Haïtien flight on November 1, 2026, bookable on one ticket from JFK or Newark with a connection in Miami.

Port-au-Prince is not an option from either airport. FAA NOTAM A0046/26 keeps US airlines out of the airspace over the capital until March 2, 2027, and Sunrise has suspended its own Port-au-Prince flights until further notice. Cap-Haïtien is Haiti's international airport for this winter. Details in Is Port-au-Prince airport open?

Getting to each airport

To JFK: the AirTrain from Jamaica (E, J, Z, LIRR) or Howard Beach (A). American departs from Terminal 8; JetBlue from Terminal 5. Sunrise has not published its JFK terminal yet. From Flatbush and East Flatbush, JFK is 30 to 60 minutes, which makes the move good news for most of Brooklyn.

From Brooklyn and Queens to Newark: the A or E train to Penn Station, then NJ Transit one stop to Newark Airport station and the AirTrain; about 90 minutes. By car, the Verrazzano and Goethals to the Turnpike, 45 to 75 minutes depending on the hour.

From Spring Valley and Rockland: the Garden State Parkway south to the Turnpike is about an hour to Newark; JFK is two hours or more. After October 25, the trade is an easy drive to Newark with a Miami connection, or a long drive to JFK for the nonstop.

From New Jersey: our Newark to Cap-Haïtien guide covers what the change means for Plainfield, Elizabeth, Irvington and East Orange, with drive and train directions.

The JetBlue question

JetBlue does not fly to Haiti today. Its Port-au-Prince service has been suspended since November 2024, and it has said it is considering Cap-Haïtien without announcing a date. Spirit Airlines, which some older pages still list, ceased operations on May 2, 2026 and is not an option anywhere. If a site sells you "JetBlue to Haiti" today, it is either an old page or a JetBlue flight to Fort Lauderdale followed by a separate Sunrise ticket. That combination works, but it is two tickets: if the JetBlue leg is late, Sunrise does not wait, and Sunrise's next flight may be two or three days later. Compare it with American through Miami on one ticket, where a missed connection is the airline's problem to fix.

Which one to book

Pick the Sunrise nonstop if its day fits your dates, you have bags (one is included), or you are traveling with a parent who should not do a Miami connection. Before October 25 that means Newark; after, JFK once Sunrise starts there. Pick American via Miami if your date is fixed or you need a daily flight. If you already hold a Sunrise ticket from Newark dated after October 25, confirm the departure airport with Sunrise or with us before you travel.
