How we got here: the four extensions

  1. November 11, 2024

Spirit aircraft hit by gunfire near Port-au-Prince

A Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale was struck by gunfire on approach to Port-au-Prince and diverted to Santiago. The FAA prohibited US carriers from Haitian airspace the following day.

  2. November 12, 2024

First FAA prohibition (30 days, then extended)

The initial order covered all of Haiti. Within weeks it was narrowed to the airspace around Port-au-Prince, which allowed Cap-Haïtien to reopen to US-bound traffic and Sunrise Airways to grow its northern schedule.

  3. March 1, 2025

    Renewal 1 of 4: six-month extension

The FAA extended the Port-au-Prince band prohibition to September 2025.

  4. September 1, 2025

    Renewal 2 of 4

Extended to March 2026. Sunrise Airways added Fort Lauderdale to Cap-Haïtien on December 15, 2025.

  5. March 1, 2026

    Renewal 3 of 4

Extended to September 2026. American Airlines announced its Miami to Cap-Haïtien service for November 1, 2026.

  6. September 1, 2026

    Renewal 4 of 4: NOTAM A0046/26, current

Effective September 1, 2026 through March 2, 2027. Same band, same 10,000 ft floor. State Department advisory remains Level 4 (updated July 10, 2026).

What this means if you booked to Port-au-Prince

  • If you hold a ticket to Port-au-Prince on American, JetBlue, Spirit or any US airline dated before March 2, 2027, the airline has cancelled that flight and owes you a full refund to your original payment method under US Department of Transportation rules. You do not have to accept a voucher or credit.
  • If you booked through Jetvala, message us on WhatsApp with your booking reference. We file the refund and can rebook you to Cap-Haïtien in the same conversation, with the fare difference shown before you agree.
  • If you hold a Sunrise Airways ticket to Port-au-Prince, Sunrise has suspended the route for security reasons; ask us for the rebooking options it is offering.

Cap-Haïtien alternatives and ground travel realities

Cap-Haïtien has nonstops from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Newark and Boston on Sunrise Airways, and a daily American Airlines flight from Miami starting November 1, 2026. Every other US city connects through Miami.

Cap-Haïtien is 250 km north of Port-au-Prince. The road between them passes through areas the State Department warns about specifically; Jetvala does not arrange or recommend that trip in 2026. Read our ground travel guide before considering it.

Santiago in the Dominican Republic is two hours from the Dajabón border and four to five from Cap-Haïtien by road with a trusted driver. It is a plan B for the north, not for the capital.

Questions people ask

Can I fly to Port-au-Prince right now?
Not on a US airline, and not on Sunrise Airways, which has suspended its Port-au-Prince flights. As of September 2, 2026 there is no scheduled international service to Port-au-Prince that Jetvala can sell.
Is Cap-Haïtien safe to fly into?
Airlines fly there because the airport sits outside the FAA's prohibited band and the north has been calmer than the capital. The State Department advisory is still Level 4 for the whole country; read it and decide with current information.
When will Port-au-Prince reopen?
The current order runs to March 2, 2027. It has been renewed four times in a row since November 2024. American Airlines has said its Port-au-Prince plans depend on the FAA. We update this page the day anything changes.
