Cap-Haïtien, Okap to everyone who loves it, is Haiti's second city and its historic capital, a grid of pastel colonial houses on a bay backed by mountains. In 2026 it is also the front door to the country. The airport handles every US flight to Haiti: Sunrise Airways from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Newark and Boston, and American Airlines from Miami daily starting November 1, 2026. Families from the north, from Milot, Limbé, Plaine-du-Nord, Grande-Rivière-du-Nord and Ouanaminthe, finally have a direct way home, and families from the south and Port-au-Prince are learning the northern route out of necessity.
Entry requirements
Same rules as anywhere in Haiti: valid passport, $10 tourist fee for foreign visitors paid on arrival in US dollars, a green immigration card filled in on the plane or at the desk. Keep the card stub for departure. Haitian passport holders use the nationals line.
Airports
Cap-Haïtien International (CAP) is 4 km south of the center. One terminal, a single carousel, no jet bridges. Arrive three hours before departure; check-in closes 60 minutes before. Sunrise and American share the counters. There is a snack bar and a small duty free airside, and the air conditioning struggles on hot afternoons.

Best time to fly
The north is drier than Port-au-Prince and the best months are December to April. Fares peak December 15 to January 8 and in July and August. The Citadelle is best climbed early morning; the Cormier and Labadee beaches are good year-round. Book six to ten weeks ahead for holidays, two to four in spring.
Baggage realities
Sunrise: 23 kg included, extra bags $40 / $65 / $115, nothing over 32 kg. American: one free 50 lb bag except Basic Economy. Bags are hand-checked on departure from Cap-Haïtien, so pack so that a bag can be opened and closed quickly.
Safety
The State Department's Level 4 advisory (July 10, 2026) covers all of Haiti including Cap-Haïtien. The north has been calmer than the capital, with the main risks being road conditions, opportunistic crime and the absence of reliable emergency care. Move in daylight, use drivers you or we know, and do not travel toward Port-au-Prince by road.
Money, SIM cards and getting around
Milot and the Citadelle are 40 to 60 minutes; Limbé about an hour; Ouanaminthe and the Dajabón border two to three hours on Route Nationale 6. Jetvala's transfer partners meet you at arrivals with your name on a sign, drive air-conditioned vehicles and charge a fixed price agreed before you land. Hotels in the city center and at Cormier are used to airport pickups. Digicel and Natcom SIMs at the airport; US dollars accepted; bring cash.
