Is Port-au-Prince airport open? The answer as of September 2026
Toussaint Louverture airport is not closed, but no US airline can fly there until at least March 2, 2027, and Sunrise Airways has suspended its own flights. Here is what that means if you need to get to Haiti.
Short answer: no scheduled international flight you can buy lands at Port-au-Prince (PAP) right now. The airport itself is not shut, but FAA NOTAM A0046/26 prohibits every US airline from flying below 10,000 feet in the band of airspace that covers the capital, from September 1, 2026 through March 2, 2027. Sunrise Airways, the Haitian carrier that is not bound by the FAA order, has suspended its own Port-au-Prince flights for security reasons. Cap-Haïtien (CAP), in the north, is open to everyone, including American Airlines from November 1, 2026.
We verified this on September 24, 2026 against the FAA's own restrictions page, which lists NOTAM A0046/26 as the current notice for Haiti, and against the State Department advisory, which stays at Level 4, Do Not Travel (updated July 10, 2026). We update this page whenever either changes.
What exactly is closed
The FAA order is not about the airport building. It prohibits US air carriers and US-licensed pilots from operating below 10,000 feet between latitudes 18°20'N and 19°10'N. Port-au-Prince sits inside that band, so a US airline cannot descend to land there. Cap-Haïtien, at 19°44'N, is north of the band, which is why American and JetBlue can legally serve it and why Sunrise Airways built its US network there. That makes Cap-Haïtien the gateway for direct US flights for as long as the order lasts, through March 2, 2027 on the current renewal.
Who could still fly to Port-au-Prince, in theory
Foreign airlines are not covered by the FAA order. In practice, the only carrier that served Port-au-Prince from the United States after the November 2024 shootings was Sunrise Airways, and it has since suspended those flights on its own. Domestic Haitian flights between Cap-Haïtien and Port-au-Prince have operated at times; availability changes week to week and the approach into Port-au-Prince is the same area the FAA is worried about. Ask us before you plan around one.
When will it reopen
The current order expires March 2, 2027. Every previous order since November 2024 has been renewed for six months, so treat March 2027 as a possibility, not a promise. American Airlines has said its Port-au-Prince plans depend on the FAA. When the notice is lifted or narrowed, the change will show on the FAA page first and on our Haiti flight status page within the same day.
What to do if you need to get to Haiti now
Fly to Cap-Haïtien. From the United States, Sunrise Airways flies nonstop from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York (Newark until October 25, 2026, then JFK) and Boston, and American Airlines adds a daily Miami flight on November 1, 2026. Search live fares on our Miami to Cap-Haïtien, Newark to Cap-Haïtien and New York to Cap-Haïtien pages.
If your family is in the south, the honest guidance is in our ground travel guide: we do not sell or recommend the road in 2026, and most families meet in the north instead.
If you hold a Port-au-Prince ticket on a US airline
The airline cancelled it. Under US Department of Transportation rules you are owed a full refund to your original payment method, not a voucher. If you booked with Jetvala, message us on WhatsApp and we will file the refund and rebook you to Cap-Haïtien in the same conversation.
