Flights to Haiti: the complete guide (written for the diaspora)
Which airport is open, which airlines fly, what a ticket costs by season, what documents to carry, and how to buy a ticket from the United States for family in Haiti. Everything on one page, verified September 24, 2026.
This is the English version of our Kreyòl guide "Vol pou Ayiti". It is written the way we would explain it to our own family: one page, every fact verified against the FAA and State Department sites on September 24, 2026, updated whenever something changes.
First thing: it is Cap-Haïtien, not Port-au-Prince
Since November 2024, when a Spirit aircraft was hit by gunfire on approach to Port-au-Prince, the FAA has barred US airlines from the airspace around the capital. The current order, NOTAM A0046/26, runs from September 1, 2026 through March 2, 2027. Sunrise Airways, a Haitian carrier not bound by the order, has also suspended its own Port-au-Prince flights for security reasons. So for the winter of 2026 to 2027, Haiti's international airport is Cap-Haïtien (CAP). There is no Port-au-Prince flight you can buy, on any site. If a site shows you one, it is an old page. Details in Is Port-au-Prince airport open?
Who flies, from where
Sunrise Airways has carried the load since the ban began. From the United States it flies nonstop to Cap-Haïtien from Miami, Fort Lauderdale (three times a week since December 15, 2025), Boston and New York (Newark until October 25, 2026, then JFK from winter 2026), on Airbus A320 family aircraft. It also links Cap-Haïtien with Kingston, Punta Cana, Santiago and Santo Domingo. Days change with demand; what you see when you search is what counts.
American Airlines starts a daily Miami to Cap-Haïtien flight on November 1, 2026 on a Boeing 737 MAX 8: it leaves Miami at 10:15 am and lands at 12:15 pm; the return departs at 1:15 pm and reaches Miami at 3:15 pm. Because it is American, you can connect on one ticket from New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Orlando and Montreal.
JetBlue has said it is considering Cap-Haïtien, with no date; its Port-au-Prince flights remain suspended. Spirit Airlines ceased operations on May 2, 2026 and is no longer an option. Delta and United have no Haiti service.
For New Jersey and New York, the only nonstop is Sunrise's: from Newark until October 25, 2026, then from JFK starting winter 2026 (Sunrise has not yet published the first JFK date). Our Newark to Cap-Haïtien guide covers that route end to end.
What a ticket costs
Indicative one-way totals, taxes and our service fee included, as of September 2026: from about $400 from Miami and Fort Lauderdale, $550 to $600 from New York and Boston, $600 to $650 with a connection from Atlanta, Orlando or Philadelphia. From December 15 to January 8 and in July and August, fares run 25 to 45 percent higher. These are indications; the search shows live prices. To understand what moves the price, read Cheap flights to Haiti in 2026.
Jetvala's service fee is $59 for the first passenger, $15 for each additional passenger, capped at $199 per order, shown on its own line before you pay. Cancel within 24 hours, at least seven days before departure, and you get everything back, fee included.
When to buy
For Christmas and New Year, buy by mid October. For summer, by early May. For Fèt Gede (November 1 and 2) and Carnival (February), six weeks ahead. Otherwise two to four weeks ahead is usually enough. Tuesday and Wednesday flights are cheaper and calmer than Sunday and Monday.
Bags: where the money goes
Sunrise includes one 23 kg (50 lb) checked bag on international fares. Extra bags cost $40 for the first, $65 for the second, $115 each for the third and fourth. Sunrise accepts no bag over 32 kg (70 lb) and does not pool two people's allowances. American includes one 50 lb bag on every fare except Basic Economy; a bag between 51 and 70 lb pays $100 more. Barrels and boxes are accepted as checked pieces within the same limits and are the first things left behind when the plane is full. Weigh everything at home. The full table is in our baggage guide.
Documents to carry
A Haitian citizen with US permanent residency flies to Haiti on the Haitian passport and returns to the United States on the same passport plus the green card. Check the green card expiry; if it expires within six months, renew before travel. A US citizen flies on the US passport and pays a $10 tourist fee entering Haiti, in cash. If you hold both passports, carry both: the Haitian one to enter Haiti, the US one to enter the United States. Children traveling with one parent need a notarized consent letter from the other. The airline needs your name, date of birth and gender exactly as printed on the passport you will travel on. Details in our documents guide.
Buying a ticket from the US for family in Haiti
It is the most common thing we do. Four things to remember:
The name must match the passport letter for letter. Ask your relative to send a photo of the passport photo page before you book, and type the name from the photo. Marie-Claude and Marie Claude are not the same to an airline.
You can pay with your US card for someone flying from Haiti. Jetvala sends the e-ticket on WhatsApp to both you and the traveler, so nobody has to print anything, although a paper copy is still handy at Cap-Haïtien.
Enter a phone number the traveler will actually have with them, ideally a Haitian or WhatsApp number, plus yours as the contact. That is where the airline sends schedule changes.
For a parent over 70, the nonstop matters more than the price. Request wheelchair assistance at booking; it is free on every airline. All the details are in Booking a ticket for your parents.
At Cap-Haïtien airport
The terminal is small. Check-in opens three hours before departure and closes 60 minutes before; be there when it opens. Every bag is weighed and hand-inspected, which is why a full flight takes time. On arrival you fill in a green immigration card, pay the tourist fee if you are on a foreign passport, and collect bags from a single carousel. Porters expect $2 to $5 per bag. Budget 30 to 60 minutes from landing to the curb.
If your family is in the south
The road from Cap-Haïtien to Port-au-Prince passes through areas armed groups have held intermittently since 2023. The State Department rates Haiti Level 4, Do Not Travel (updated July 10, 2026), and names the roads into the capital specifically. Jetvala does not sell or recommend the road in 2026. What most families do: relatives from the south travel north in daylight with people they know, meet you in Cap-Haïtien, Milot or Limbé, and everyone travels home together. We explain it honestly in our ground travel guide.
If you hold an old Port-au-Prince ticket
Any US airline ticket to Port-au-Prince dated before March 2, 2027 has been cancelled by the airline, and under DOT rules you are owed a full cash refund, not a voucher. If you booked with Jetvala, message us and we will file the refund and rebook you to Cap-Haïtien in the same conversation.
